Rookie Mistakes You Should Never Do to Your Home

Don’t make the same mistake twice

Most of the time, we can get away with a few mistakes. But when it comes to house maintenance, it could go as far as costing you your beautiful home.

Small house maintenance mistakes can be easily overlooked, especially if you think doing the extra work for repairs would “inconvenience” you. Truth is, although they may seem minor and unimportant, such bad household maintenance habits may take a heavy toll on your house, not to mention the expenses that go with it.

But fortunately, it’s not too late to cultivate a good relationship with your household chores! To speed up the process, remember these common maintenance mistakes you should never do:

  1. Doing your own plumbing. This is just one of the many household matters that you should leave to a professional. Aside from the plumbing codes that you must adhere to, unlicensed plumbing will void insurance. Hence, any mistakes made by a licensed plumber will not be handled at your expense.
  2. Pouring strong chemicals down the drain. This will damage your plumbing system, leading to damaged pipes and water leaks. Although indirectly, this leads to detrimental effects on human health, affecting the water sources for consumption.
  3. Not changing the HEPA filters in your vacuum cleaner. Indoor air must be safe from harmful particles, such as pollen, pet dander, and dust mites. To maintain optimal airflow in your vacuum cleaner, the HEPA filters should be clean enough to improve suction and therefore replaced if necessary. As per CleanLink, “These filters capture the smallest of particles, down to 0.3 microns in size, 99.97 percent of the time.” Know when you should replace your vacuum cleaner filters.
  4. Letting your dog sleep with you. It’s nice to have a furry sleeping companion beside you in bed to add extra comfort. But is it really ideal to sleep with your dog? Your pets are perfect carriers of allergens and other harmful particles. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep!
  5. Ignoring water damage. Water is your friend—well, sometimes. Who would’ve thought water could bring your house down? One of the common causes of water damage is leaking pipes. This leads to structural damage and makes your home conducive to mold growth.
  6. Not cleaning your doorknobs. With the pandemic still raging, there’s no reason to not sanitize everything. Visiting friends and relatives come and go, but germs? I don’t think so. It’s high time you make your own antibacterial cleaner. Who says cleaning can’t be fun?
  7. Not replacing your kitchen sponge. You’d be surprised to hear that your kitchen sponge is dirtier than your toilet seat. The good news is it’s easy to sanitize your kitchen sponge. Put your wet sponge in the microwave for 1 minute on high. That’s it!
  8. Letting the trashcan pile up. Beneath that heap of garbage is a breeding ground for insects and pests. Proper garbage disposal is a must unless you’re expecting unwanted visitors. To avoid an overflowing trash can, it’s best to reduce your garbage from the get-go and establish a good trash management system.
  9. Not checking the smoke detectors. What’s more important than a beautiful home? You—minus the fire and smoke injuries. Regularly check your smoke detectors as it can go a long way in preventing future household accidents.

Better to be safe than sorry

It’s okay to make mistakes as long as you’re learning from them. Remember these rookie mistakes the next time you check on your house. Doing so will not just make your house look good or cut down the expenses but also ensure household safety. Always remember that house maintenance improves your quality of life. Suffice to say, taking care of your home is part of self-development. And most importantly, cultivate good habits along the way and live a little.
